206 bikers ride in ABATE fundraiser

The cool air and wind couldn't keep people off their motorcycles Sunday, as 206 people turned out for the Sandhills Poker Run and then took off on their bikes to collect playing cards from the pit stops all over northeast Colorado.

"It went great," Don Enninga of ABATE District One said. "Even though it was cool, a lot of folks turned out and rode."

The eighth annual ABATE of Colorado District One Sandhills Poker Run, the motorcycle club's primary fundraiser, started at 9 a.m. Sunday at Riverside Park in Fort Morgan.

Participants came from as far away as Denver on the West to western Nebraska, Julesburg and Wray on the east, and from Riverside Park, riders and passengers headed out to several popular northeast Colorado stops.

They included the Queen Lounge in downtown Fort Morgan, AJ's in Goodrich, the Club Tap Room in Fort Morgan, The Place in Hillrose, Henry's Pub & Club in Sterling, Mares Bar and Grill in Akron, and The Corral Sports Bar in Brush.

"It was just one of those days," rider Steve Dunn, of Fort Morgan, said. "It was cool enough to be a challenge, but not cold enough to stop us. It was a good ride."

The announcement of the poker hand winners marked the end of the event. The top winner was Terry Kanzler, of Fort Morgan; second place went to Tyler Schiel, of Fort Morgan; third to Rook Larsen, of Fort Morgan; and the worst-hand honors belonged to Kirk Fry from Firestone.

Some riders reported strong winds during the last leg of the 162-mile ride, Enninga said, but no other inclement weather caused problems.

"The weather turned out a lot better than a lot of people anticipated," Enninga said.

Everyone participating in the run received a poker hand gathered at the stops, an event T-shirt, and meals along the way, including at Henry's, which provided free hot dogs.

Henry's Pub & Club owner Trevor Henry said he likes sponsoring the Sandhills Poker Run and having the riders come to his bar.

Plus, he said, "they like stopping here because Kathy feeds them," he said of his wife, Kathy Henry.

More than 200 door prizes were donated by merchants from northeast Colorado, and they were given out to poker run riders.

This year's run also included a moment of silence for a fallen ABATE of Colorado, District One member, Susan Shaner, of Merino who died unexpectedly last year. Her husband, August Shaner, and their daughters and grandchildren were present for the remembrance of her and all fallen bikers.
