Olympia Comics Fest isn't all kids stuff
“More of it is funny than you might think,” said San Francisco cartoonist Larry Gonick. “Part of the problem with history is that it’s perceived as ‘it’s dull and it’s dead.’ When you start thinking about historical figures as flesh-and-blood, living creatures, they get a lot funnier.
“I don’t try to add humor; I try to find the humor that’s already there,” he added. “And believe me, it’s there, because people are strange.”
Gonick has spent a lot of time thinking about historical figures: In 2008, he completed “The Cartoon History of the Modern World, Volume II,” the last in a seven-volume cartoon history of the world that begins with the Big Bang.
Gonick will be one of the special guests at the 10th annual Olympia Comics Festival on Saturday. The festival includes a stage show, an expo with panels and workshops, and an exhibit of work by local artists.
“The gallery showing at The Northern is the really new thing about this year’s festival,” said festival director Chelsea Baker. “It helps us reach our goal of bringing comic art into the community.”
The stage show and expo will feature interviews with Gonick, Paul Chadwick and Megan Kelso. Chadwick is best-known for his series “Concrete,” which won six Eisner comic industry awards. Kelso, a 1994 graduate of The Evergreen State College, has won two Ignatz awards and a Xeric grant.
Gonick’s educational works include cartoon guides to chemistry, the environment and – coming up next – calculus.
Calculus doesn’t sound like an easy thing to draw. And is it funny?
“I don’t know,” Gonick said. “It’s not funny enough, probably.”
Fortunately, he and his publisher aren’t expecting you to buy a copy for bedtime reading. “It’s a real calculus textbook,” he said. “Most of my science books are structured for use in courses.”
It’s the history – on which he spent 30 years – that is his greatest passion. “That’s the thing I got into this to do,” he said. “There’s a lot more freedom to pick and choose what I want to talk about, a lot more room for opinion and commentary.”
Asked if he considers himself a historian, he said: “Compared to some people, I know a lot of history. I know some historians who like my work, but I don’t think I can be taken seriously as an historian because I don’t dig in the archives.
