The $50, 5 HOUR CANOE SAIL RIG
Bill Mantis, in his personal and irreverent style, takes the reader through the steps of constructing a sailing rig for a canoe. Directions for construction, as well as the materials list, are precise and thorough. He explains why a canoe makes a decent sailboat and why he chooses to sail a canoe rather than his other sailboats. Mantis, an experienced sailor and novice boat- builder, also includes historical data that will interest the sailor and non-sailor alike. The low price point makes this a perfect gift for the sailing enthusiast, the amateur, or the merely curious.
Excerpt from The $50, 5 HOUR CANOE SAIL RIG: " The canoe rig described... meets even the most stringent criteria for a good investment. It costs less than $50 in off-the-shelf materials... It requires no more than five hours of physically undemanding, technically unsophisticated labor to assemble. It will completely and forever debunk the mystique of sailing which the conspiracy of sailors and manufacturers of sailing products have so carefully cultivated over the last half century. It allows for an after-work sail. The rig probably makes a canoe more seaworthy. It certainly allows a canoe to be used in a wider range of wind conditions. Finally, it stimulates one's fantasy life. Cruising in an open, traditional craft, with a sail reminiscent of rigs seen in the South Pacific, one cannot help but think that an undiscovered island is just over the horizon--or perhaps just on the other side of that midrise apartment built on the point.
